Instructions:  Write a 4-5 page paper that provides a thesis statement relating to the prompt below.  The paper must use both Jacob’s novel and TWO outside sources.  One source must be the Roark textbook and another source must be a scholar who analyzes the novel.  The paper must include a title, an introduction, a thesis statement, a conclusion, a Bibliography (not counted as one of the 4-5 pages), and in-text citations.

Prompt:  Though the concept of the slave narrative was not new by the time Harriet Jacobs novel was published, the idea of hearing the experience of a female slave (who was also a mother) shocked readers.  Explain in your essay why the book would have had such an impact on readers.  Use aspects from the time period, events from Jacobs personal story, and cultural attitudes towards slavery to help shape your essay.

You must search for CREDIBLE outside sources, meaning that user-generated sites such as blogs or Wikipedia are not appropriate for this assignment.
