Introduction
The Grand Jury system has been a vital part of the criminal justice system. The United States and Liberia are the only countries that continue the use of this kind of jury. The jury is usually composed of 16 to 23 citizens and is empowered to conduct official proceedings to investigate criminal conduct. The most unique feature of the system is that the suspect or accused is not present nor are they represented in any manner. The Grand Jury can be used to indict someone in secret.

In recent times some have called into question if the United States should still use such a system. The concept of transparency has become very popular. The Grand Jury can be a shield against prosecutor abuse as the decision to indict someone is made by citizens not an elected official or appointed official. Yet some still feel the system is outdated and does not meet the needs of the community.

Activity Instructions
Research the topic of the Grand Jury system. Look at how effective the system is or is not. Discuss both of these and then your suggestion for reforms if necessary, abolishment or retain as is.

•3 pages (approx. 300 words per page), not including title page or references page

•Double spaced

Grading and Assessment
The following general guidelines are an approximation of the grading structure:

70% of assignment grade will come from content, critical thinking, and general treatment of the topic.

4. Identify new developments in the law and the legal process and know how each impact on crime victims, criminal justice agencies, citizen taxpayers, and practitioners.
6. Apply problem-solving skills to contemporary issues, ethical dilemmas, and critical questions in criminal justice.
7. Locate and critique current reports, research monographs, and discussions in print and electronic literature and relate them to contemporary criminal justice practice.
9. Regularly follow and report on crime and justice agency news found in print and World Wide Web media resources.
