Be focused, have a central theme and follow it. Know what you want to say. Have a conclusion in mind. Don’t wander.
Do not pad your essay with “filler”; e.g. in a short essay what is most important is your own ideas, don’t spend too much space on data copied from books or the web, though you should be doing some research.
Be concrete, look closely at the texts, give examples, talk about style and language. Express your own opinions and ideas. Also, it is better to look at something “small” closely and in detail, rather than attempt broad surveys generalizations that you cannot support.
