Gone Baby Gone

Introduction

Baby gone baby is a 2007 movie that incorporates the genre of drama, thriller, crime and mystery. The movie rotates around a 4 year old Amanda Mc Cready who disappears from home, but the police makes little to no headway in unravel ling the case. This leads the girl’s aunt into hiring two private investigators who admit that they have little experience in unravelling such a case, however, the family insists on hiring the two investigators because they are not the police and the know Boston neighbourhood where they all live. The movie addresses various societal issues with planning matters as the leading focus of the plot developed.

The movie represented a neighbourhood that with limited mobility. This could be because of the poverty that is depicted in the movie. The limited mobility is because of concentrated poverty, which means there is a large density of socio-economic dispossession. The Dorchester area of Boston depicted in the movie shows a neighbourhood with high population, unemployment with low land use leading to people to live in clusters. Amanda’s mother, Helene McCready, stays with her brother and wife because they cannot afford to live in different houses. This depicts the lives of most people in this neighbourhood.

Secondly, the also depicts a neighbourhood with a tight social network. When one looks at the society, one sees a neighbourhood where people seem to be acquainted with everyone or owe a favour to each other. While Patrick Kenzie is conducting his investigation, he tries to reconnect with many of his acquaintances in order to piece the case together. Patrick depicts a typical person who seems to know most of the people in the neighbourhood. This could be attributed to his line of work, which requires the knowledge of all the people that run the city. More so, the police seems to know most of the people in the neighbourhood. This could also be attributed to their line work. For example, Remy Bressant, a police, seems to know some of Patrick Kenzie’s Acquaintances. This depicts the neighbourhood as a setting with a tight social network.

Dorchester, Boston in the United States map, is a place on the North-eastern region of the country. This region consists one of the richest areas of United States, where some of the states around this area came top in the tally of the richest states in 2007. Although most of the riches is found around this area, Dorchester is a neighbourhood that is not rich. Although the people are poor, after the mention of the lost child, the people in this area came together with the aim of helping a mother in plight to save her daughter. This shows a neighbourhood that believes a child is vital to the community. For instance, against his judgement, Patrick kills the paedophile without any thought after defiling a child and killing. More so, Remy believes any person who does not offer a child basic needs deserves to die.

The movie shows a family that is not a typical father, mother and children. This shows that the Dorchester neighbourhood is not bothered by the presence and the absence of both parents in a family. Helene, Amanda’s mother brings her up by herself there has been no mention of the father. The society does not seem to hold this against the character. Consequently, there are people who believe that if the mother or father cannot take care of a child, it is justifiable if the child is taken and given away either forcibly through kidnap or the social service.

Furthermore, the movie depicts a society that has a high density and a pedestrian oriented urban development. The movies show a neighbourhood that harbour multifamily residential that are clustered together, also comprising high-rise apartment, which are also, clustered.  In terms of movement, the population mostly relies in pedestrian movement. This could be attributed to the fact that the area is small, and most people are unemployed; therefore, transportation is limited.

Social contact and personal communication are also social issues that are portrayed in the movie.  The movie shows that people in this society need to have contact to obtain information or favours. Patrick gets information from a friend in a bar when he tries to piece the case together. More so, he goes to a Drug dealer friend to get information about a couple of paedophiles that were realised from the prison around the time Amanda disappeared. Furthermore, the police also use CIs to get information for on-going crimes.

All the way through the movie, the neighbourhood introduces urban crime such as kidnap, drug dealing, paedophile and gang related crimes. Kidnap is the main highlight of the movie in which a young child reported missing and two months later, another is reported missing. Corruption in the police department is also an urban crime in the movie depicted but somehow kept under wraps.

One could say the movie was meant to show the moral compass of a society. Many moral decisions are made throughout the movie. The character, Patrick makes two moral choices in the movie. First, Kenzie kills a paedophile man who killed young child and is left debating whether it was his place to kill him. In his debate with Sergeant Remy, he tells Remy he is a Christian and he was taught not to kill. Secondly, Patrick faces a moral dilemma when he tries to settle on either leaving to Amanda with her kidnapper who could give her a decent life or take her to her mother. This dilemma leads to this break up with girlfriend and partner, Angie Gennaro. More so, Capt. Jack Doyle, with the help of Amanda’s Uncle and sergeant Remy, kidnaps a child and tries to justify his actions to Patrick kenzie.
