GMO-2
Instructions:
Read each article on GMOs. After learning about GMOs, use the chart below to track information about each author’s argument.
? Article 1 – Pro: Can GMOs Help Our Economy While Hurting Our Planet?
? Article 2 – A Case Against GMOs
? Article 3 – GMO Technology: A Research Tool Becomes An Ethical Debate
Article 1: Cheung Article 2: Miller Article 3: Smith
What is the author’s argument about GMOs? Jessica Chueng supports GMO’s Miller stands against GMO’s Smith partially supports GMO’s
What evidence does the author use? The author relies on actual events that have or may occur Miller uses evidence from an Australian government study Smith uses evidence from research done in the University of Free State, South Africa, and the National Institute of Agriculture Botany(NIAB)
Does the author have anything to say about the opposition? Are his/her comments accurate? The author says that activists argue that GMO’s rework organic codes thus going against natures authority. This however is not accurate. Miller says that bio-tech should conduct proper studies in order to prosper honorably. This is accurate. Smith agrees to the fact that potential risks of GMO’s are unknown. The fact is accurate.
Does the author offer any solutions or compromises? Are they valid? Smith offers valid solutions Miller does offer valid solutions Smith offers valid solutions
Are there any flaws in the author’s logic? What are they? There are flaws in her logic since she has facts about the good effects of GMO’s but she doesn’t have real supportive evidence that prove her facts
Yes there are flaws in the authors logic since the author compares the outcomes of tests done to lab rats and animals to what might actually occur to humans There are no flaws in the authors arguments since he relies on evidence from actual studies done in different institutions including the NIAB.
Are the author’s facts verifiable? Jessica’s facts are verifiable although in her article she has not stated where she got her evidence from Some of Miller’s facts are not verifiable since they require actual tests to be done on human subjects Smith’s facts are verifiable
With what parts of the author’s argument do you agree? Disagree? I agree with the fact that bio-technology can offer innovative ways of inserting vaccines into foods such as bananas in order to cure various diseases I agree with the authors comment on bio-tech industries to first conduct proper studies on their products before releasing their products to the market Smith claims that extensive testing and labelling is required to test GMO’s from wild types, and that the potential risks of GMO’s are still debatable. I strongly agree with these facts.

You’ve done some good analysis of the featured article. Let’s review your work in detail.
Organizer feedback:
In the first part of this project, you’re asked to review three articles on the topic of GMOs, and respond to questions about each. Ms. Cheung is in favor of the use of GMOs; Mr. Miller is against it and Ms. Smith sees some pros and cons, and urges more testing.
Â
Cheung article:
Your assessment is accurate. Ms. Cheung argues that GMOs are beneficial and could be a solution to the problems of malnutrition and food shortages.
In response to the question, What evidence does the author use, you responded:
The author relies on actual events that have or may occur
I am not sure what you mean here. Ms. Cheung does provide evidence and you should include examples of the evidence that she uses. What are ‘events that may occur’? How would she know about future events?
In response to the question, Does the author offer any solutions or compromises? Are they valid, you responded:
Smith offers valid solutions
First, this is the Cheung article, not the Smith one. And you should include whatever compromise or solution that the author mentions, rather than just respond yes or no.
Â
Miller article:
Your analysis of Miller’s article is also accurate. He urges caution with the use of GMOs in the food supply.Â
Here too, in response to the question, Does the author offer any solutions or compromises, you’ve responded:
Miller does offer valid solutions
You should describe the solution(s) that the author mentions.
Â
Smith article:
And as you noted, Smith takes a more neutral approach, looking at both sides of the issue in an effort to better understand both the pros and cons.
Here too you should describe any solutions mentioned by Ms. Smith in the article.
Â
Op-ed article feedback:
In this part of the project, you’re asked to write your own op-ed article that responds to the question “Are genetically modified foods a good development or a bad one and why?†The instructions also ask that you cite your sources throughout the article.
First, Mareshia, your op-ed is 502 words, and the minimum for the project is 600 so the first step is to expand your content to at least reach the minimum. [Note: the list of references are not counted in the minimum.]
Â
Another issue is that there is quite a bit of content from other sources that is not identified as such. Here’s one section:
In order to achieve this resistance, the plant is incorporated by a gene for toxin production from the bacterium Bacillus  thuringiensis (Bt). The toxin is considered safe for human consumption since it is currently used as a conventional insecticide in agriculture.
Â
This appears to be taken from the World Health Organization (WHO) website, but you’ve not identified that source:
Resistance against insects is achieved by incorporating into the food plant the gene for toxin production from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This toxin is currently used as a conventional insecticide in agriculture and is safe for human consumption.
The source has to be identified, even if you change the wording a bit (paraphrased). So you need to identify all content from other sources, whether you’ve quoted it word-for-word, or paraphrased the content. The paragraph you’ve written onoutcrossing is taken largely from the WHO site.
Â
There’s a conclusion that you have made that is not accurate:
The bio-technology also allows insertion of vaccines into crops such as bananas, which is much beneficial to countries that aren’t able to afford needles and sanitation.
The problem is not lack of needles in these countries; the problem is food shortages due to other conditions. Providing needles is not what solves the food problem, so you should review your sources and revise this section.
Â
A valid point that you make is that there are potential health issues related to GMOs in the food supply. However, I cannot understand the reason that you have listed:
It is said that these types of foods can provoke allergic reactions, although the transfer of genes from organisms that are commonly allergenic to  those that are non-allergenic is discouraged, unless a demonstration of the protein product of the transferred gene is non-allergenic.Â
Perhaps you can revise this so that the point you are making about allergenic qualities is clear. Also, here too, if this content is from another source, you must identify it. Most of the op-ed should be written in your own words, with quotes or other material used as examples or to support your opinion.
Next steps:
Revise Organizer responses, as described above
Identify all sources
Use less copied content, and more of your own writing
Let me know if you have questions about any of this feedback.
