Assignment Description

Your task in the major essay for our course is threefold:

1. To establish the existence of a problem as well as to lay out the relevant facts concerning the problem—an argument of fact

2. To conduct an argument of value–one that argues the importance or significance of the problem under discussion, when there is some disagreement as to whether or not it is important or significant

3. To then make an argument of policy about the problem examined in your argument of value—an argument as to what course of action should be taken to address the problem discussed in your argument of value

In other words, you’ll be looking at problems of various sorts, and doing three things: Demonstrating the reality of the problem as well as establishing any pertinent facts concerning it, persuading potentially skeptical readers that the problem you identify is worth their consideration, that it is important or significant enough to demand their attention, and then recommending a course of action to solve the problem, or at least ease its severity.

You can organize your essays in several different ways, using a range of structural models that we will discuss; modified classical arrangement works particularly well for most students in introductory composition courses. Whatever structural approach you take, you’ll need to make sure that you:

Clearly identify a problem

Demonstrate its existence and educate your audience as to what it is most important to know or understand about the problem in question

Clearly assert a claim as to the problem’s importance or significance

Offer a proposal as to how best to address the problem

Consider a range of viewp01oints as to the problem’s very existence, its significance or importance and how best to deal with the problem, defending your own arguments in these regards from potential counter-arguments

Strive, in your essay’s concluding remarks, for a lesson or insight or broadened perspective to be gained from your discussion and analysis of the problem

Make ample use of research-based source material and document that material appropriately with proper in-text citations and a well-executed list of Works Cited

If any of the above comments are unclear or raise questions or concerns, please let me know now.
