Garden Mainttenance
1. Draw up a maintenance program for any garden, perhaps your own garden (submit in a table format) Include times to prune, mowing schedules, fertilising. Mulching, all the aspects that make up a productive maintenance schedule. Describe (in approx half a page) the garden and explain why you think this is a sensible maintenance program. Describe (in a paragraph or two for each, or in point form) – how would you maintain the following: • A wrought iron garden seat. • A pine picnic table and chairs. Suggest a fertilizer for each of the following situations and explain what is in it, how it would work and why it would be appropriate in that situation: • As an annual dressing on a rose • On annual seedlings as a side dressing • On general trees and shrubs as a foliage spray • On general trees and shrubs which hare alive but not growing strongly • On a lawn which has sparse and slightly yellow growth Submit a paragraph for each of the above. Select a garden – describe the particular situation and any nutritional problems. Suggest a treatment for each problem you describe. Submit approx 1 page. Obtain information on three different special purpose fertilizers (e.g. Indoor Plant Food, Lawn Food etc). Leaflets from the manufacturer or labels on the packets should give you breakdowns of the nutrients in the fertilizer and their relative proportions. • List the proportions (or amounts) of each of the different nutrients in each fertilizer. • Briefly explain (one or two sentences) why these nutrients have been included and what the reasons for the different N, P, K ratios are. (You may already have information here, or if not, you could get it by either doing an internet search, or by visiting a supplier of fertilisers (e.g. nursery) and reading labels or literature of products being sold). Report on the three different weed problems you investigated: • one on a fence line • one in a garden bed or amongst plants • one in a pathway Describe each problem and suggest two different ways of treating the problem in each situation. Submit approx 1 page. Compare three different ways which could be used to control weeds in a badly infested area (e.g. a new house block which is to be landscaped, a roadside tree planting scheme, a wilderness area, a fallow field/paddock which is to be cultivated for cropping etc). What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of the different types of treatments compared to each other? Submit approx 1 ½ pages. Submit a sketch or photo of each of the 6 weeds you found in your set task. • Identify these weeds (if you can’t identify it, your tutor will try to help). • Suggest suitable herbicides which would control the weed. Look at least three different herbicide labels (if you don’t have own these, visit a hardware store or garden centre which stock garden chemicals). • Note the names of each herbicide, the chemicals found in each, and suggest a situation where it might be appropriate to use each. Find and identify at least four different environmental problems, in places other than the garden looked at in your set task. • Describe the problems • Suggest an appropriate treatment for each Submit approx 1 – 1 ½ pages Make up a list of the advantages and disadvantages of chemical pest control. Make up a second list of the advantages and disadvantages of non-chemical pest control. Find and identify at least four different pest problems. • Describe each one, and the situation. • Suggest a suitable chemical control method for each. Find and identify at least four different plant disease problems. Briefly describe each of them. Suggest (in no more then a paragraph for each) an appropriate treatment for each. What safety rules do you think should be mandatory for chemical spray operators working in your local parks and gardens department? One by one, explain (in a sentence or two for each) why each of these rules are important. What types of turf grass varieties would require high maintenance in your area? Give three different varieties. Name two different turf varieties which would have a relatively low maintenance requirement in your locality. Compare trickle, capillary and overhead spray systems. Briefly list the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Select a sprinkler system for a garden which is not irrigated: • Draw a sketch of the garden, showing the layout and the components of the irrigation system. • Give reasons why you think this system is more appropriate for the garden compared to other alternatives. • Describe (in ½ page) the procedures required to maintain the system. Make up a list of 60 trees and shrubs. Present information on the maintenance requirements of these plants in tabulated form, perhaps with several columns as follows: • Column 1 the names of each plant • Column 2 the pruning requirements • Column 3 fertilizer requirements • Column 4 watering requirements etc. Select a garden (yours, a friend’s, or perhaps a public park). Identify the plants in that garden which require a relatively high level of maintenance. Choose plants with a lower maintenance requirement which could be planted to replace those high maintenance plants. Explain (in a sentence or two for each) why you have chosen each one as you did. these are all the tasks i need completing for my course.
