From the book the Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham and the book Critical theory today by lois tyson the second edition

Paper details:
First explain Gerard Genette’s distinction in his structuralist theory of narratology between “story,” “narrative,” and “narration.” Next explain the difference between the story told in The Painted Veil and the narration of that story by the author. Pay particular attention to the fact that a fictional character’s story always proceeds chronologically, from beginning to end on a time-line, whereas a narration of that story may put events that occurred earlier in the story of the character’s life and world at a later point in the narrative as it is told to the reader. What do you surmise is the reason that Maugham decided to tell his story based on the life and world of Kitty Fane in and through a narrative that is not strictly and simply chronological?
