Getting to Know You Activity- Food and Culture Freewrite

Because the summer quarter is short and intense, I wanted to ground our course inquiry and research in a topic that all of us can access. Food is something I love and have a complex relationship with. Food intersects with questions about memory, identity, politics, health, the environment and economy, travel and world views.

For our first course assignment, besides the Syllabus Quiz, I am asking that students do the following:

1) Briefly describe your relationship to food in a paragraph or two. These may include, but aren’t limited to an earliest memory of food, identity, beliefs, or preferences.

2) Name 5 items in your fridge or cupboards that best reveals who you are.

3) Name your ideal or favorite meal (recipe or place). What is the item? Why is it significant to you? Where can you find the meal? Please include the recipe if you can or describe it and the place you might encounter it with as much detail as possible.

* Students are asked to provide a visual image in their Get to Know You activity and creating a Canvas profile with a distinct picture, image or icon to help us know who you are.
