Figuration in Australian art has its own unique history. In the 1950s and early 1960s, the Antipodeans challenged new developments in Australian art. Show how the Antipodeans challenged Australian art, and give examples to illustrate your argument.

The history of figuration in Art in general (what is figuration).. then lead on to early figurative Australian art – Figurative art began with indigenous Australians and could be seen in cave paintings etc. Then after settlement more figurative artists began to emerge.
Paragraph 3:
The beginning of new art movements around the world in around the 1950’s where did these movements start and what were they about. In particular focus on the rise of abstraction in overseas countries.
Paragraph 4:
This rise of different more abstract forms of art lead to the Antipodeans movement. When these new movements in art in other counties began to gain popularity in Australia The Antipodeans group formed in an attempt to stifle these new art styles and keep figuration popular
Paragraph 5:
Members of the antipodeans– Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, David Boyd, John Brack, Robert Dickerson, John Perceval and Clifton Pugh, and the leader of the movement was Bernard Smith. Talk about how this team challenged the way that art was moving and encouraged a return to figuration. The Antipodeans had to come together and create a number figurative works in order to achieve their goal of a return to figuration.
