Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been a part of our modern society for more than 20 years. A GMO is a living organism that contains new genetic information. This may be a foreign gene from another organism or an extra or modified version of a native gene. Examples include bacteria or plants modified to produce human proteins for the treatment of disease, crop plants modified to resist pests or herbicides, or livestock modified to produce more milk or grow faster.
