› This is the major piece of work for BUSS5000 and will demonstrate an understanding of the entire semester’s tutorials, lectures, allocated readings and additional
research. Students will be required to select a business case from the three that are provided. Drawing on the entire semester, they will be asked to respond to the
questions outlined in the case study.

› Using material from BUSS5000, and any relevant additional material, students are required to choose one of the three case studies provided on Blackboard. › No
template will be provided, but students are expected to conform to report-writing style. › Also, you should have completed the online modules, ‘Critical Thinking for
Business’. This should be evident in your work.
Case Studies
There are three (3) case-studies to choose from: 1. SPC Ardmona – cost of business challenges and bailout troubles 2. Transfield Services – off-shore detention centres
3. Facebook – WhatsApp acquisition

Case Study 1: SPC ARDMONA › Evaluate the decision of the Victorian State Government to bail out SPC Ardmona with a $22 million rescue package.
› What were the reasons for the bailout?
› You may wish to consider the ‘triple bottom line” as part of your analysis. › Use your own research into this topic and your knowledge of the analytical tools and
business concepts from BUSS5000 to assess whether the bailout is an effective use of taxpayer’s money.

Case Study 2: TRANSFIELD SERVICES › Evaluate the effectiveness of the activist campaign in early 2014 against Transfield Services’ involvement in the construction and
servicing of off-shore detention facilities in Nauru and Manus Island. › What were the reasons for the boycott? Your analysis must demonstrate an understanding of the
difference between Transfield Holdings and Transfield Services. › Use your own research into this topic and your knowledge of the analytical tools and business
concepts from BUSS5000 to assess whether this campaign was ultimately effective in achieving its aims.

Case Study 3: FACEBOOK › Evaluate the recent decision by Facebook to acquire WhatsApp for US$19 billion.
