For this essay, you will write something 4-5 pages long. The topic will be sort of broad and yet sort of narrow as well. I want to avoid the usual argumentative/persuasive essays on such big, generic things like gun control, who the best candidate is, why one should drive a certain kind of car, and so forth. As with some of the previous essays, this one will be tied to your experiences at MCC and/or KSU.

Write an essay regarding religion and MCC/KSU. You do not have to be particularly religious to do this assignment. You have to take a stand on some aspect of the topic, though. In fact, you should come at the topic in a way that is manageable. Also, this does not have to be a “policy” argument about how students should/should not be required to do something.

The really, really big problem with this essay will be finding a focus. You will have to work hard at deciding what aspect of this topic you can reasonably handle with explanations, examples, and reasons, while also paying attention to the usual writing issues: thesis, organization, good usage, and so forth.

One aspect of this assignment that is required is answering possible objections to whatever it is you want to argue for/against.

We will work on how to generate some ideas this week and on into next week, and then you will begin crafting your final out of class essay for the semester.
