In her book chapters, “After an Icon (1994),” “The Whopper (1994),” and “The Turtles (2012), Zha Jianying vividly describes the changes of Chinese intellectuals, such as writers, producers, journalists and publishers, under the commercialization of China’s cultural world during the post-Tiananmen Democracy movement.  Exactly how had Chinese intellectuals changed and what had caused these changes? In your view have these changes made China more democratic? Please give evidence from these chapters to support your viewpoints.

1.    Of all the events that have taken place in the closing decades of the twentieth century, China’s entry into the global economy and its decision to commit itself to economic development may in the long run prove to be the most significant among its modernization efforts. Exactly how did China conduct its economic policy under Deng Xiaoping’s leadership?  How did China’s population play a role in Deng’s economic policy? How successful was China’s economic development? What was the price that China had to pay for this development? (Note: Deng’s leadership covers the period from 1979 to 1997.)
