Eugene Delacroix, a French artist

Eugene Delacroix, a French artist

You do not need secondary sources for this paper. I am looking for your thought and your understanding of the pictures or film and how you can connect these to what you have learned so far in our course. You need to write this paper if you did not write the one for April 1st.
1. Eugene Delacroix, a French artist, created 17 lithograph illustrations in 1828 to accompany Goethe’s Faust, and, famously, Goethe asserted that “Delacroix has surpassed my own vision.” I have posted a selection on BB (under “Paper Topics”). In addition to the first one (title page) choose at least three of the others and take a stance on Goethe’s very positive evaluation (i.e. do you think they are highly effective?). Things to think about: what ways does the artist use to translate Goethe’s characters/ ideas / tone into the visual media (e.g., think about the use of light, of color, of lines–horizontal? Vertical? Circular? Where and what is the visual focal point of the picture? How does the artist situate this focal point, i.e., what else is included in the picture? How do these other elements affect the main focus of the picture? Be sure to include an analysis of the effectiveness (in your opinion) of the title page.
