Ethics

You will do one argumentative paper in this course. Papers should be 1,000 words (+/- 200 words). Your paper should apply one of the main ethical theories we cover in class (Utilitarian, Kantian, Care, Virtue, or Natural Law) to some problematic case. This requires: 1) explaining (briefly) the ethical theory, 2) briefly exploring the case and possible responses to it, 3) giving an argument about the correct course of action in response to the case, which should make reference to the theory you are employing, and 4) responding to an objection.

Rubric:

The paper grade will be calculated as follows:

10% spelling/grammar

E.g., typos, grammatical mistakes, ease of reading

10% organization

E.g., introduction & conclusion, signposting of arguments, citation

20% theory explanation

E.g., is the ethical theory clear?

10% case/problem explanation

E.g., is the case or problem, and the relevant possible solutions, clear?

30% application of theory to case/problem

E.g., is there a clear, valid, and persuasive argument that the theory recommends a certain course of action?

20% reply to an objection

E.g., is the objection clear, relevant, and strong? Is the reply adequate?

For each section, the following descriptions may be used as exemplars for the listed grades (I do not list every possible grade):

A excellent; shows original thought on the subject; very well supported & explained argument; extremely clear; no mistakes

B+ very good; well-thought out; well supported & explained argument; very clear; almost no errors

B good; thoughtful; argument is supported and explained; mostly clear; few errors

B- fair; shows some thought was put in; argument lacks complete support/explanation; some unclarity; some noticeable errors

C adequate; doesn’t demonstrate careful thought about the topic; support/explanation for argument is not adequate; a substantial portion of the paper is unclear; noticeable errors

D inadequate; not carefully planned; lacking a clear argument/support; frequent errors
