Many ethical dilemmas occur in the delivery of health care, and this paper will give the student a practice opportunity in resolving a health related problem that presents as an ethical dilemma. The requirements of the paper will guide the student in improving his/her capacity to rely on personal intelligence and moral responsibility to analyze ethical situations, anticipate consequences, and take action with courage. The student will consider and explore the issues and the complexities in making a decision that has ethical ramifications. Alternative solutions are justified based upon the evidence of the literature and the ethical basis for the solution. The positive and negative sides of the decision are to be clearly defined. Paper 2: Ethical Dilemma
Assignment:
Assume that you are a member of an ethics team who must present a recommendation to a National Ethics Board, which will decide how an autonomous (driverless) vehicle will be programmed to act in the event of an unavoidable accident. Write an argument supporting your position on the issue.
You should think about what sort of priorities a self-driving car should have. Should the car try to preserve as much life as possible? Should the car prioritize the life of the driver? Should the car place importance on a person’s social or political standing? To clarify: you are not advocating anyone’s death or picking someone to die. It is important to note that there is no right or “morally correct” answer here. The point of the assignment is for you to articulate what you feel the car should do based on your own principles and judgement. You do not have to say some variation of “The car should swerve because….” or “The car should not swerve because…” While this is an extremely simplified way of looking at this problem, it can be used to help you expose your intuitions. That said, your thesis could be something like this: “Autonomous cars should try to preserve as much life as possible because X,Y,Z.” Later in your paper, you would write about how your recommendation would handle certain scenarios, and make a case for why your recommendation is stronger than the alternative possibilities (naysayers).
A Starter Scenario to Consider:
Imagine a situation where a driverless car (carrying a single passenger) is on a collision course with a pedestrian crossing the street. The car can avoid hitting the pedestrian if and only if the car diverts into a nearby tree. If the car diverts into the tree, then the passenger will be severely injured or even killed.
Possible Modifications to the Starter Scenario:
1. The passengers are a young couple and their newborn baby
2. The passengers are a large group of elderly citizens
3. The only passenger is the President of the United States
4. Instead of a single pedestrian crossing the street, there is a group of young children
5. The pedestrian is an elderly person
6. You are the sole passenger in the car

Essay Requirements:
You must write a 750-1000 word argumentative essay. Your argument will be evaluated on its effectiveness (how persuasive it is). Remember, an argument’s effectiveness depends on the sorts and quality of rhetorical appeals made. You must use CDW format (Toulmin’s Method). You must clearly “distinguish what you say from what they say.” You must “plant a naysayer in your text.” You must include a minimum of 3 sources.
Honors Additions:
In addition to the requirements stated above, honors students must write 1000-1250 words and include a minimum of 4 sources.
Format Requirements:
MLA format, 12 point font, double spaced, with a Header. You must include a “Works Cited” page. Please use Purdue OWL as a reference.

1. Can algorithms be held responsible for deaths? How similar would an algorithm be to an actual human driver? Can you make an argument from analogy about this?
2. Is there a difference between “killing” and “letting die”?
3. How do the modifications to the scenario influence your reasoning or final argument?
4. Should a driverless car prioritize protecting the life/lives of its passengers over all else? Is that what a responsible human driver would do?
