Please read ALL of the following carefully, critically and patiently (see discussion questions and guidelines below, DUE July 28th by 11:59pm:

In Dialogues: An Argument and Rhetoric Reader, Chapters 11-12

* In 750-1000 words (this would be around 3-4 pages in MS Word), please respond to the following prompts. Remember, collectively, your discussion posts will comprise a large portion of your grade. Please make sure you write a well-organized and critical reaction to my questions below. Before posting your reaction, I recommend your create your response in Microsoft Word so you can revise, edit and save before you post. It might take you a couple days to compose your post.

1) Read and reflect on the essay “Saplings in the Storm”. What does Pipher mean when she says that girls “disappear mysteriously into the Bermuda Triangle” in early adolescence? Why do you think she uses this analogy repeatedly. Does this essay enrich your understanding of your own or other genders? Why and/or Why not? Use relevant, direct quotations from other essays in Chapter 11 to support your discussion (2-3 references).

2) Read and reflect on the essay “Child-Man in the Promised Land”. What are the social and cultural implications of the “child-man” ethic? How could it affect both men and women today, and for the next generation? Use specific commentary from the essay to support your discussion. Use relevant, direct quotations from other essays in Chapter 11 to support your discussion (2-3 references).

3) Throughout Chapter 12 you will review issues regarding contemporary medical ethics and culture. After reading and reflecting on the voices in Chapter 12, revisit “Survival of the Wrongest” by David H. Freedman. What, if anything, do health reporters owe their audience/reading public? What ethical standards should they adhere to, if any? Use specific commentary from the essay to support your discussion. Use relevant, direct quotations from other essays in Chapter 12 to support your discussion (2-3 references).
