Description:

For this assignment, you will be writing an academic investigation of a subject matter of your choosing. This paper will be in the style of Erin O’Brien’s article “Prostitution Ideology and Trafficking Policy,” in which you investigate all aspects of a particular subject matter. Because of the nature of investigation your conclusion may end up being an open one: you may not have a final answer to offer the reader but you will have thoroughly explored all the possible outcomes of different ideas about your subject.

For example, if your subject concerns homelessness, it would probably be impossible to offer a final answer that would “solve” homelessness. Instead, you may explore the various ideas revolving around homelessness: what are the causes of homelessness? what are the effects of homelessness on the homeless? what are the effects of homelessness on society? what kind of things help the homeless? etc. Any one of these questions would likely provide more than enough material for this paper; if you were to choose to investigate the causes of homelessness there will be numerous and sometimes competing ideas on what causes homelessness. There may not be a final answer to this question, but you will have explored various ideas about what causes homelessness.

It is very important that all of your sources are of academic quality. The best way to ensure this is to use the UNL library site (libraries.unl.edu). In this paper you cannot support ideas or claims with personal judgements or beliefs. For example, if you are addressing the question of what kind of things help the homeless you cannot make a claim such as: “In the Bible from Matthew 6:3-4 it is said that ‘when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.’ Therefore, when we help the homeless we should not brag about it.” It would be acceptable to instead say something like this: “This study took a survey of the homeless which shows that a homeless person is less likely to use services provided to them if they feel that those who are offering the services are doing it in order to brag about it. Therefore, when we help the homeless we should not brag about it.”
