Essay report

Questions about whether international organizations (IOs) erode state sovereignty produce sterile, unproductive debates. Those who believe IOs impinge on sovereignty generate litanies of examples to support their arguments, while those more circumspect do the same. Thus, it seems that we are asking the wrong question, or staking our knowledge about IOs on an ill-conceived idea. The more appropriate question to ask concerns the degree to which IOs have altered the state (its roles and functions) and citizen expectations of it. Discuss (that is: take a position and argue it). To what degree and in what ways have IOs (universal, regional, functional, adjudicative) altered the state and citizen expectations of it? What might this mean for the future of IOs and for states?

For all questions, use parenthetical citations (Author Surname, 123), where 123 refers to page number). Citations are placed before end punctuation, not after. You do not need to include a bibliography for course readings. You may use the following abbreviations for certain texts: K&M (for Karns and Mingst); B&F (for Barnett and Finnemore); T&W (for Thakur and Weiss); and T&VL (for Thakur and Van Langenhove). You do not need to include a bibliography since you are using course texts.
DO NOT USE OUTSIDE SOURCES unless absolutely necessary (and I really don’t think it will be necessary). If you do use any outside sources (e.g. IO websites), you will need to properly (and fully) cite those sources.
Papers should number FOUR (4) single-spaced pages, with prose in 11 or 12-point Times New Roman font, normal margins.
