1. Question of Free Will: (Determinism vs Libertarianism) Determinists believe that the events of the past bring about the events happening now and that we do not have the power to change anything that will happen. On the other hand, Libertarians hold that we actually have the power to change our future by choosing different courses of action. So, for this paper, you will compare Roderick M. Chisholm’s position that we do have free will in fact with A. J. Ayer’s position that we are fundamentally determined. Tell me which do you like better and why? (5 PAGES)

2.Theory of Mind: (Dualism vs Materialism) Dualism is the idea that we have a non physical mind, or self, which accounts for our self awareness, emotions, thoughts etc. Materialism is the idea that the physical brain is what somehow accounts for all mental phenomena such as awareness, emotions. So, for this paper, you will compare Thomas Nagel’s dualistic opinions with Daniel Dennett’s materialistic opinions concerning the nature of the mind. Tell me which do you like better and why? 3. Epistemology: (Rationalism vs Empiricism) Empiricism is the theory of knowledge–that is the group of theories which attempt to account for how it is possible for us to have knowledge. Two major epistemological theories are Rationalism and Empiricism. Rationalism holds that that the source of knowledge is reason, or the mind. Empiricism holds that the source of knowledge is external sense impressions, or observation. So, for this paper, you will compare René Descartes’s
