Controversy and debate about the most effective approaches to teaching and supporting literacy learning for
young children has continued for decades. This debate has centred around the relative efficacy of phonics and
whole language approaches to literacy instruction. Research the theoretical perspectives of both the phonics
approach and the whole language approach to language learning.
Present the arguments for and against both a whole language and phonics approach to language teaching and
learning. Critique the two approaches and develop a standpoint on the issue. Discuss how both approaches
can be integrated to facilitate optimal language learning. Include the implications for diverse learners in your
critique and in your argument for the position that you have taken on the issue.
