Essay 2, Primary Source Essay English 1102

The second essay of this course asks you first to begin to focus on an academic discipline with which you will work, ideally, for the rest of the semester. We shall discuss in class what constitutes a discipline, but it is important for the work to come that you are firmly grounded in a field of academic study. In this context, this essay will ask you to engage with a primary source, something that sheds insight into the typical actions of the people who work in the discipline you have chosen. As we shall also discuss in class, you may think outside the box about what this primary source may beit could be a written record of some kind, or it could be an object, it might also be the physical building in which those in your discipline work. However, you must now go beyond naturalistic observation and the research question and into the realm of evidence. For this paper, you will make an assertion about what it is that people in your discipline do, but you will base it entirely on one primary source. The central question of this paper is: based on, what do people in discipline dothat is, what appears to be their central concern? Please note that, once again, you will already have preconceived notions of what those in this discipline do, and you will have to try to distance yourself from this knowledge. Its not what you know about them, but what you can prove with the only source at your disposal (which I am limiting to one primary source). How well you base your analysis solely on the evidence you have is the primary criterion for your grade on this paper. However, I am also looking for the presentation of that evidence in the body of your essay, as well as continued attention to the framework of the essay. The final product will be 4-5 pages long, double spaced in 12 point Times New Roman font and formatted according to APA standards(sans cover page or abstract).Rough draft is due for peer review Sep. 27 and the final draft will be due in dropbox by midnight on Oct. 4.
