Erikson’s Psycho-Social stages

Erikson’s Psycho-Social stages

Introduction

Knowing more about the adult developmental stages and conducting your own brief research project can help to educate yourself and in turn help you to educate others, thereby reducing ignorance about conditions that affect many aging people. The more that people understand adult development, the less bias and social hardships these individuals will experience.

write a 1800 – 2000 research paper in APA format. This is a formal assignment, meaning that formal rules of English and grammar must be applied.

Paper Guidelines

1.You will study Erikson’s Psycho-Social stages using the text book and the supplied Erickson site/PowerPoint (at the bottom of this page) as common ground.

2.You will review the Aging Quiz you took at the start of the course.

3.Develop a list of questions you want to ask a senior citizen in an interview. Such as the following: â—¦What do you care most about? (Stage 6)

â—¦Who are the most important people in your life? (Stage 6)

â—¦What do you do with most of your time? (Stage 7)

â—¦What are your goals? (Stage 7)

â—¦What advice would you give to someone our age? (Stage 7)

â—¦Which stages of your life have been most enjoyable? The most important? (Stage 8)

â—¦What have been some of the most significant events of your life? Why? What age were you at each event? (Stage 8)

4.You will interview a senior citizen (AARP Criteria) to learn about Erikson’s sixth, seventh, and eighth stages.

You may return to the Aging Quiz and ask questions from it. True/False questions make for a bad interview so make the questions open ended by prefacing them with “Do you think…” e.g. “Do you think declines in all five senses normally occur in old age?”

Take careful notes during this interview. Your paper will be a comparison of the results from your aging quiz with what you learned from the interviews interlaced with what you know about Erikson’s final three stages of life.

To Do Checklist

Create a mission statement for your project using the following simple format:

•To do what? (Be specific. It is your contract with yourself to stay on task. Eg. You can legitimately say “write a research paper that demonstrates my current understanding of adult development”)

•For whom?

•So they can…?

Put your Mission Statement in the Appendix of your paper for me to read.

Gather, Gather, Gather. Do your research. Go to the web and do a review of the literature on aging. A good place to start: Megapsych (at the bottom of this page)

Review Developmental theory. You might want to peruse the Erickson site/PowerPoint found in the resource section below. Pay particular attention to the Maladaptive and Malignant discussions at the end of each stage.

Revisit the Aging Quiz: You took it the first week of class. The questions are at the bottom of the page.

Compare your paper with what is expected.

Paper will be processed through Turnitin.
