Enrique’s Journey—Sociological analysis (3 – 4 pages typewritten, double spaced).
Students will apply the three major sociological theories presented in this course to two themes which are presented in the Enrique’s Journey. Some of these themes which are evident in the book are family, immigration, race, deviance, religion, etc.. Each of the two themes selected by the student is then analyzed within the Structural Functional, Social Conflict and Symbolic Interactionist Paradigms. How does each theory differ in the manner in which it analyzes this concept? For example, if the Family was selected as a theme, how is Enrique’s family understood within each of these theoretical frameworks. If immigration is chosen how does each theory analyze immigration. Compare and Contrast and draw some conclusions. The theme or concept selected should be analyzed throughout the book and not merely one incident of family, immigration, etc. The essay should be developed with the selected themes and theories clearly presented throughout the written essay. There should be clear transitions between paragraphs. Students must cite all references used in their analysis (i.e. concepts, theories, etc.) within the body of the text, and provide a reference page. A title page should also be provided. Proofread prior to submission. Essay due date is found on the Reading Schedule. This assignment is 15% of total grade. A rubric is available in the course home page in the “rubric assignment folder”. This rubric informs students as to how the assignment will be graded and will be useful to students in developing this assignment. The format must be APA style.
