Identify and describe a specific youth cultural grouping (either contemporary or historical). Does the grouping constitute a subculture? What sorts of cultural activities did/do members of that grouping participate in? Analyse the way in which that (sub)-cultural group and its activities are/were presented in the mainstream media. Did they become ‘folk devils’ and why?

2. Select and outline a series of events in which the activities of young people led to a public expression of moral alarm, in particular through the mass media. To what extent did these events constitute a ‘moral panic’, in Stanley Cohen’s terms? What role, if any, did new media play?

3. To what extent have ‘moral panics’ in contemporary Australia become racialised and what explains this development? Make reference to theories of ‘moral panic’ covered in the course and provide examples to illustrate your argument.
