Mt. Carmel Baptist Church
Youth Ministerial Strategy
By Colby Helms
Vision:
We envision students in an environment that; 1) fosters a relationship with Christ, 2) engages in expository preaching of the Bible, 3) encourages sincere evangelism, 4) trains their mind to be able to articulate points of theological and apologetic significance and 5) facilitates biblical fellowship.
Discipleship& Development
1) A ministry geared towards knowing Jesus. We desire to see the youth at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church really know Christ in an organic way. We recognize that the only way to know Jesus, and in accordance be saved, is by faith alone. Therefore, our first and most important desire is to see every student meet the risen Lord and experience relationship with Him.
2) A ministry that engages in expository preaching. As stated previously, our utmost desire is to see every student come to genuine faith in the Lord therefore we must engage in the continual reading and teaching of the Scriptures. This means at our foundation of our worldview lays the Bible. Expository preaching will be the primary format utilized to encourage the habitual reading of the scriptures and to create concrete theological understanding. Too often young adults leave the church once they enter high school and college due primarily to the fact that they have received “shallow” or “watered down” teaching. It is crucial that the youth of Mt. Carmel receive solid biblical teaching that encourages deep study of God’s word in hopes to build a solid Christocentric worldview that will equate to longevity in one’s spiritual life and Church involvement.
3) A ministry that loves people. True disciples of Christ will follow the commands of Christ including loving their neighbor enough to tell them about Jesus. Many young people avoid this in our current culture due to how ostracized one can be for their extrinsic expression of their faith and due the increasing religious pluralism that discourages any idea of one true religion. However, with the proper training (to be discusses below); one should be encouraged to stay consistent with the Scriptures by taking serious the words of Christ in the great commission to tell the world about Him! Therefore we encourage and train students to reach the lost in their schools, homes, and everyday life.
4) Every Youth Pastor is an apologist! It is of vital importance that every Christian be able to defend their faith and answer the difficult questions concerning the historicity of the resurrection, the existence of God, the reliability of the New Testament and other fundamental aspects of the faith. Therefore, one key aspect of the youth ministry will be a robust declaration of the facts surrounding the Christian faith and training in answering the difficult questions of the faith in an effort to anticipate questions and objections centered on the students faith whether they come from extrinsic sources such as friends at school or intrinsic sources such as one’s own doubts. This will encourage students to grow in their faith as well as reach out to others in the community to attend regular meetings and to understand the Christian faith in a salvific way!
5) A ministry focused on building a sincere network of fellowship. The Church is seeing many abandon her in favor of a private relationship with Christ. However, the scriptures make no mention of Christians who are not rooted in the Body of believers. Therefore we will encourage a sincere network of fellowship by first showing the group that we genuinely care about their lives inside the church and outside the church. Whether this be attending sporting events with them or aiding them in dealing with the critical dilemmas that arise in their lives, we want to show that we have a true passion for helping and supporting them. Second our hope is that through the environment of fellowship we encourage that they in turn would respectfully reciprocate this expression of love by inviting friends and encouraging one another in Christ.
Reaching the Lost
• Student Evangelism: Immediate students of Mt. Carmel receive proper training in evangelism, apologetics, and theology that will allow for the drive and confidence to reach out to fellow students in their school system.
• Outreach Events: Setting up camp at a particular high student traffic location around or near school locations and encouraging young people to partake in fellowship, ask questions, and receive free literature that will encourage participating in regular youth meetings.
• Community Involvement: This will involve the integrating into the community of both Youth Pastor and his wife to directly communicate with other families and young people about the benefits of getting involved at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. (Kayla Helms will be in the school system teaching science and math at the Middle School level.)
College Students
In the near future, our ambition is to reach out to the college age community in a similar manner than we have in Elizabethtown, KY with our ministry The Areopagus. We have found that college students respond very well to safe environments that do not shy away from the tough questions concerning God’s existence, the Bible’s reliability, other world religions, politics, dating/ relationships, sexuality, death, alcohol consumption, etc. If possible, in the future we hope to see a thriving and diverse college group that is open to all and logistically located off Mt. Carmel’s campus to encourage those who would never step into a church the opportunity to experience an environment that is respectful and tells the truth in love. As in the past, we will set up outreach events at the local colleges and proceed to give potential free food and literature focused on apologetics all the while facilitating question and answer sessions to encourage college age students to attend regular meetings at our desired location. If possible, we would like to also implement live music and an untraditional setting to manage an environment that would cater to college students yet, engage in deep study of the Bible while entertaining complex philosophical discussion.
