Choose only one of the three following statements on which to base your paper:
1. If I were to have kids, I would raise them in a gender-neutral way.
2. I think that watching porn would have a negative impact on my sex life.
3. I think that orgasm is a crucial element to any sexual encounter for me.
Here are some DO’s for your agree/disagree paper:
• DO have a clear & concise thesis which should summarize your paper in one sentence.
• DO pick a side of clearly either agree or disagreeing with the chosen statement.
• DO primarily discuss your personal believes, values and experiences. DON’T write a research paper about the topic.
• DO have topic sentences for their supporting paragraphs.
• DO have smooth transitions between ideas.
• DO include a personal experience/friend’s/family’s story to explain why you feel one way or another about the topic.
• DO include citations & cite them incorrectly. You must use class material as sources to get full credit for the citations criteria.
• DO have a real conclusion that reiterates their thesis. You’d be surprised how many essays just abruptly ends.
• DO check/fix your grammar/typos.
The citations themselves are worth 20 points so please make sure that you follow the instructions for choosing your supporting quotes and citing them correctly.
Directions for citing your quotes/paraphrase:
Lectures: At the end of the sentence containing your quote from lecture, write (Lecture & Date of lecture) Example: (Lecture, 3/15/2015). Each different dated lecture counts as a different source.
Elia-Chen Anthology: At the end of the sentence containing your quote from the textbook, write (Elia-Chen & page number of the quote) Example: (Elia-Chen, p. 122). Each chapter of the anthology counts as a different source.
Class Reader: At the end of the sentence containing your quote from the reader, write (Class Reader & page number of the quote) Example: (Class Reader, p. 258). Each article in the readers counts as a different source.
Crooks & Baur textbook (on 2 hour reserve at the library, room 185) At the end of the sentence containing your quote from the text book, write (Crooks & Baur & page number of the quote) Example: (Crooks & Baur, p. 350). Each Chapter in the Crooks & Baur textbook counts as a different source.
Website Article To include a quote from the Class Website articles as a citation for your paper, just write the abbreviated titles that I have in the links in parenthesis and the words “Website article” at the end of your sentence containing the quote. Ex: (Porn Becomes Sex Ed, Website Article)
Link to Articles: http://online.sfsu.edu/ivychen/HED320%20additional%20articles.html
If your quotes support your argument & is cited correctly, you will get 4 points / citation for a total of 20 points. You will get credit for 5 quotes/citations from class material, including the new Website Articles that I will post. If you have used an outside source, you can use it to as a 6th or 7th quote and also list the source on a separate Works Cited page. If you only use class material, you do not have to attach a separate Works Cited page, just list the source at the end of the sentence containing your quote
