Order Description
The purpose of a literature review is to convey to the reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, the strengths and weaknesses of authors? theories/arguments, areas of controversy in the literature, and/or any gaps in knowledge about aspects of that topic. For this literature review, you are to choose a topic of interest that is related to the one of themes discussed in the fall semester of this course. Make sure that the theme is neither too narrow nor too broad.
For this assignment you need to critically review five (5) relevant academic sources. Up to two (2) sources can be course readings. This requires you to seek out additional book chapters and/or journal articles in the library and through online academic databases. The literature review should be organized around and relate directly to the research topic you are interested in exploring. Overall, you should present your review of the literature as a summary of what is known and not known on your topic. It should not, however, be simply a descriptive list of the literature available or a set of summaries.
There are three (3) main sections to the paper:
1) Introduction(1page).Inanintroduction,theauthortypicallyoutlineswhats/heaimsto do and how s/he is going to do it. You will need to make clear what your research objective is ? that is, the problem or issue you are discussing ? and how you plan to carry it out in your paper. Also comment on why you have chosen this topic and/or why you believe it is important to research.
2) Body: Literature Review (5 – 6 pages). For the body of the paper, you will conduct a literature review of five (5) scholarly sources related to your topic (about one page for each source). Briefly explain what each reading is about and how it is relevant to your topic of interest. How has the author approached or contextualized the topic? What are the strengths or limitations of this reading? In what ways does this chapter/article contribute to your understanding of the topic?
3) Conclusion (1 ? 2 pages). In the conclusion of your literature review, you will need to address two points: a) Based on the knowledge acquired from your literature review, what are your
recommendations for future research on your topic? What other questions has your
research raised? b) How does your literature review contribute to knowledge about women, work, and
family?
