- Topic: Choose a contemporary debate. For this paper you will be given a choice between two
debates with the following propositions: 1) Does Science refute Religion? 2) Does God exist?
*NB: I will also give you the option of seeking out a debate that interests you as related to these
two topics, such options include: Evolution vs. Creationism, What are the limits of science? Is
the origin of the universe best explained through science or religion?
Format: This is an argumentative paper that will require you to: (1) develop a proposition you
wish to defend, (2) provide an argument supporting that proposition, (3) consider an objection
to your argument, and (4) provide a reply to that objection, showing that your view is the correct
one.
3. Research: There are numerous sources that will help inform your argument for this paper. Make
use of a mixture of academic sources, credible news media sources, online resources, and other
multimedia such as recorded public debates.
4. Write: After making your choices about the debate you which to analyse, you will have to decide
what position you intend on defending in your paper. I suggest you make an outline and a
proposed thesis statement to help guide your essay. This will ensure that your essay is focused on
a particular issue and that it is ultimately directed at a clear goal.
