Order Description
Consider the issue of inheritance:
Suppose your parents leave you a billion dollars and my parents leave nothing but debts. You are freer to pursue your aims than I am to pursue mine. If the state’s role is to protect individual freedom, what should the proper role of the state be? Should it maximize your parents’ freedom to dispose of their wealth as they see fit? Or should it seek to promote equality of opportunity by providing a ‘level playing field’ that is not tipped toward anyone else’s advantage, by, for example, levying a stiff inheritance tax on large fortunes?
