Discussion question

There are FOUR Discussion questions and each one had to be between 250-300 words.
1. The first one is read: Hobbes, Leviathan XIII-XV
First, explain Hobbes’ views on the origin of war (conflict).
Second, explain his views on the role of government in stopping conflict between its citizens.
Third, apply Hobbess theory to an object of your choice and explain why his theory is or is not an effective explanation of this object.
2. Next read: Kant, “What Is Enlightenment?” and answer discussion questions
First, explain Kant’s distinction between a private and a public use of reason.
Second, explain why Kant thinks that acting according to this distinction can gradually increase Enlightenment in society?
Third, apply Kant’s theory to an object of your choice and explain why his theory is or is not an effective explanation of this object.
3. Third discussion is: Kant, Critique of Judgment Book II Sections 46-50 (pp. 174-188)
First, explain 2 aspects of your choice of the Kantian “genius.”
Second, explain the role of “spirit” in the products of Kantian genius.
Third, apply Kant’s theory to an object of your choice and explain why his theory is or is not an effective explanation of this object.
4. Last discussion is: Kant, Critique of Judgment Book II Sections 23-29 (pp. 97-125)
First, explain Kant’s distinction between the mathematically vs. the dynamically sublime.
Second, explain either a) how an experience of the mathematically sublime changes the mind’s “basic measure” or “fundamental measure;” or, b) how an experience of the dynamically sublime reveals our inner moral independence from nature’s dominance.
Third, apply Kant’s theory to an object of your choice and explain why his theory is or is not an effective explanation of this object.
