Discuss the mechanisms by which infections can result in disease, and theapproaches available to inhibit these mechanisms in an attempt to treat and
manage infectious diseases.
What is this assignment all about ?
Infectious agents can cause damage and dysfunction at a cell, tissue, organ, or the
entire host level. But how do infectious agents cause damage, dysfunction and
disease in their hosts ? What are the precise biochemical and physiological
mechanisms of this damage and is the damage a direct result of the structure or
functions of the infectious agents, or an indirect result of the host’s response to
infection ? In order to relieve symptoms and treat the disease, these treatments have
to modulate these pathogenic mechanisms. How do the different treatments
available for infectious diseases inhibit or reverse these direct and indirect
pathogenic processes ?

Understanding of the means that infectious agents directly cause damage, dysfunction and disease?
Understanding of damage, dysfunction and disease results from the response of the host to the infectious agents.
