INSTRUCTIONS:
You will write a paper containing a minimum of 350 words – not including Footnotes – answering the question below. (see Blackboard’s “Legal Codes and Social Responsibilities” for the Documents))
Discuss how similar crimes and punishments differ between Exodus 20 -23 and the Code of Hammurabi. (Remember to concentrate on only 1 similar crime and punishment for each body paragraph – minimum of 3 examples)
You must incorporate both documents; however, you do not need to devote equal time to each. Also place this evidence in broader historical context by incorporating info from the text and class discussions; however, restrict outside information to no more than 15% of the paper’s content and cited sources.

Papers must use the Chicago Manual of Style citation for formatting Footnotes. For a handy reference — I have provided a copy of the “Chicago Manual of Style Quick Guide” for you on Blackboard.
FORMAT:
• Your essay should be double-spaced, typed in Times New Roman 12 point font, with no more than 1-inch margins.
• Your paper must be at least 350 words, not including Footnotes, but you may write as much as you like. (Extensive quoted material will not count in the word count)
• Your paper should have a Cover Page containing the following information
o Name of Student
o Name of Course
o Word Count
o Title of Paper Italicized
o Date
• You must use Chicago Style Footnotes — not Endnotes.
• You do NOT need to include a Bibliography
• Simply staple your paper in the upper left hand corner
• If WEB course – simply submit via an email attachment

USING FOOTNOTES;
• You will need to use Footnotes for all direct quotations and for close summaries of events in the text or close paraphrasing of the text.
• After all direct quotes or close summaries/ paraphrases —- in Microsoft Word go to Menu “References” and click “Insert Footnote.” This will create a number in your document and then a place to add the Footnote at the bottom of the page.
• Each Footnote needs to contain the information and format as outlined in the Chicago – Style Citation Quick Guide posted on Blackboard under “Assignments”.

WRITING AND STYLE
• State a clear thesis at the outset of your paper at the end of the introductory paragraph. All arguments in the body of your essay must clearly support that thesis. If you do not know what a thesis is, you may consult the following: http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/thesis_statement.shtml
• This essay is a primary source analysis paper, use the primary sources as evidence, including quotes from the sources, to support and prove your thesis. Use thematic paragraphs with topical sentences to organize your paper and to make your main points clear.
• Make sure your argument is historical and NOT moralistic
• Do not use first person (that means either I, we, you, us, one, they, etc.).
• Do not use contractions
• Do not use the word “seems” to avoid making a concrete statement because it is weak and denotes uncertainty.
• Make sure to capitalize properly
• Use correct spelling and grammar throughout the paper
• Do not use presentism – your paper is about the time period under consideration and is not a comparison to contemporary life.
• Make sure to Proofread
