Task: A young male, aged 10yrs (Alex) presented to the emergency department with weakness, fatigue and blurred vision. On assessment in triage, his mother discloses to the nurse that her son had been experiencing other symptoms such as increased thirst, frequently going to the toilet to pass urine, and weight loss. Diagnostic tests revealed that Alex had a high blood glucose level and glucose in his urine. After being stabilised, Alex was discharged from the emergency department. Alex was further referred to his General Practitioner (GP) for further testing which revealed a diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus Type One (1).

This essay task requires the student to explore the following as they relate to a young person who is newly diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.

* Discuss the epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 including age of onset, incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality rates within Australia.

* Discuss the diagnostic procedures for diagnosis and monitoring of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 with a brief explanation of each test that demonstrates your understanding.

* Explain the pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1. This should include a description of how normal blood glucose control is altered in people who have Diabetes Mellitus Type 1. Also include a short discussion on diabetic keto-acidosis.

* Discuss the management and care of a person who has Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 including insulin replacement , blood glucose monitor requirements, diet, exercise and education.
