Discuss joining a Robotics team in 9th grade. I had just moved from Houston to Austin. The team, the Pi Rho Maniacs, had been working together for 2 previous years. They were all Engineer/math, right brain types and I am an artistic/creative left brain type. I joined to develope team “Spirit”, create a mascot, be the mascot and to design and build a fun, interactive booth for competitions. The original 9 team members thought that was completely unnecessary and treated me like an alien. I thought they were all anti-social, boring, nerds. For the first month, priot to our first competition they all worked together on the robot and I worked by myself, mostly at home, on my stuff. When they saw the gigantic Greek letters (Pi and Rho) I made out of insulation board, the Robot Roadrunner (Roadrunner school mascot)mascot costume I made for myself and the banner, the booth with all the flyers and interactive Ipad information, video and decorations they were shocked. When for the first time ever we won the Aspire Award which is the highest award given at FIRST Robotics competitions which includes “Spirit” along with helpfulness to other teams and all round “coopertition” (Nothing to do with how well Robot does in competition). We all learned it takes all types to create a whole winning experience. From then on we all got along and went on to get 7th place in The World Competition that year!”
