Part A.

Issues and Challenges Associated with Stakeholder Engagement and Management on Complex Defence Projects.

Project management within the defence sector has often been described as one of the most complicated processes.  Successful completion of a project may require several years and the development, implementation and evaluation of a successful project management strategy which includes a strategic framework for managing stakeholder expectations and engagement that will avoid pitfalls and minimise associated risk.
Defence projects, in particular, can be very difficult to manage even under the best of circumstances due to various structural, behavioural, and environmental complexities.  Many of the complexities stem from the fact that the project manager is likely to be beset by a range of project stakeholders with different agenda and vested interests.  The management of these stakeholders can either have positive or detrimental impacts on large-scale complex projects within any organization.

In Assessment 1 Part A, students are asked to consider, the issues and challenges associated with stakeholder engagement and management on complex defence projects and come to a consensus on:

What do you think are five (5) important key challenges in managing stakeholders on complex defence projects and the strategies that need to be put in place to address them?

It is acknowledged that this activity may require some background reading, drawing on personal experience, canvassing of the literature or even consideration of some specific projects in order to identify previous lessons learnt and crystallise viewp01oints before consensus is reached.  An example of one typical project for this particular assessment is attached but I am sure there are others and you should attempt to identify some of them.  Given the amount of preparatory work involved and the group interaction required, the timeline to complete this assessment piece can be extended, if necessary.  Students are encouraged to cite reference sources used as the basis for their discussions and interactions and the conclusions which are drawn.
