LAB ASSIGNMENT # 3
1) This week collect some data from 10-20 participants (e.g., family, friends, fellow-students, etc.). Choose two simple variables such as how many text-messages the person got within the last hour(variable: TEXT) and their mood on a five-point scale (variable: MOOD). Make sure that you follow ethical standards when you do this (e.g., voluntary participation, person is not negatively affected by being asked). For this task you can team up with fellow-students; however, the data file you will create needs to be unique (e.g., you collect data with your friend from class; she will use the participants 1-23 and you will use the participants 3-26).
a) Create an SPSS file and enter the data. When you submit the assignment attach the file (5 points).
b) Run a regression analysis with the data. Follow the steps as explained to you in the lab. Attach the SPSS output file to this assignment (5 points)
c) Interpret the results. You need to comment on the stats you got (e.g., “R2 = 0.36 means that the regression equation explains …”) and what they mean (e.g., “This means that the older the person the more he/she likes math”. Follow the steps as explained in class/lab. The TAs will show you what needs to be included (10 points).

2) Pick five suitable variables from the ECLS-K database (four IV and one DV). One of the IV you need to dummy-code.
a) Run a multiple regression analysis with the data. Follow the steps as explained to you in the lab. Attach the SPSS output file to this assignment (5 points)
b) Pick one participant and compute by hand for that participant the predicted outcome (based on the regression equation you found through SPSS). You need to write down the steps (e.g., where in the SPSS output file did you find the coefficients). (5 points)
c) Interpret the results of the multiple regression. You need to comment on the stats you got (e.g., “R2 = 0.36 means that the regression equation explains …”) and what they mean (e.g., “This means that the older the person the more he/she likes math”. Follow the steps as explained in class/lab. The TAs will show you what needs to be included (20 points).
