• Contextualize – Put what you saw into a larger context. Does the dance relate to something beyond this performance? Does it come from a specific tradition (culture), from a specific time period (historic), from a particular artist’s vision (aesthetic)?
To number your answers nor answer these questions as they are presented, in this order, in your paper. Instead, refer to this as a guide to help you organize your ideas regarding the performance. These are general questions designed to give you a starting point from which to begin thinking, discussing and writing about dance. The work you have the strongest reaction to when viewing, whether good or bad, will be, that which is easiest to remember and write about.

What: What style of dance did you observe? Use action verbs and adverbial modifiers as needed. Was virtuosity important? What themes (narrative or abstract) did you observe? What roles did music, sound, text and silence play in the performance? What choreographic elements did you observe (discuss use of space, bodies, relationship, time, energy)? What effect did the lighting or sets/props have on the dance? What effect did the costumes have on the dance? Was any other kind of technology important?
Why: Describe why you chose this ONE WORK to write about. How did the work engage you? Emotionally? Visually? Kinetically? Intellectually?
When: When was the dance choreographed? Was it a premiere (new work) or a repertory piece?
