Creativity in Mathematics (theory)
Project description
Creative Assignment #1
Work on this Assignment to get an A grade.
Please send me the system you think about before writing the whole paper. I want to check if the system you thought about is right or not and I want my professor to accept it before you write everything so please send me the system as soon as you are done..by Tuesday or Wednesday or maximum Thursday.
INVENT YOUR OWN NUMBER SYSTEM
Overview:
The purpose of this assignment is to develop a new number system to be used in place of our current Hindu-Arabic, decimal (base-10) number system.
Outcomes:
At the end of this project, you will have:
– constructed an entirely new set of numerals that is not borrowed from any current or
well-known ancient number system or alphabet
– defined either a positional or non-positional system that is not a variant of the decimal
(base-10) number system or other well-known number system (e.g. Roman Numerals)
– outlined methods for performing basic arithmetic (e.g. adding, subtracting, multiplying
and dividing) on the numbers in your system
Food for thought:
– How did you come up with your numeral system?
– Why did you create it the way you did?
– How would you teach children to use this system? Specifically…
o how would you teach them to count?
o how would you teach them basic arithmetic?
– What are the benefits of this new system?
– What are the drawbacks of this new system, especially in comparison with our current
Hindu-Arabic system?
– Do you believe that you (or anyone else) could improve on our current numeral system?
o If yes, what would need to be done in order to improve the system?
o If no, why do you believe our current system is the pinnacle of human
achievement in the area of numeracy?
Requirements:
– Your assignment should be approx. four (4) pages (to a maximum of 5), double-spaced: o Approx. two (2) pages detailing the number system and explaining arithmetic
o Approx. two (2) pages for your wCreative Assignment #1
