COURSEWORK 2
Aerodynamics and Basic Flight Mechanics (Weighting: 50%)
Electronic Submission ONLY, s
ubmission links for Assignment
1
on Blackboard available until: 23.59GMT
on
Date
See Assignment Scheduler

Report PLUS Wind Tunnel Data Spreadsheet, 2 files in total required.
This assignment is
in
3 parts
the first is
an aerodynamics investigative study, the second is based
on a wind tunnel laboratory and the third is on flight
mechanics including propeller dynamics. Each
of the three parts is outlined in more detail in the following sections.
REMEMBER this is an electronic submission ONLY.
You may answer any analytical aspects with neat
hand

written
calculations
. However please
answer the discussion sections with typed answers.
State any references in the text
and a reference section
removed to the back
.
If you haven’t done so already
, it would be worth
learning how to use
the equation editor in Word to present your workings
or
calculations but hand written calcs scanned and inserted into the
text is fine also. Use SI units throughout and where necessary estimate values from the literature citing the source. A
contents page must be included and pages numbered for ease of referenc
ing where necessary.
N.B.
All assi
gnments to be handed in via the link available on Blackboard, this is an electronic ONLY
submission, unless file too large in which case submit a CD or alternative disposable media via Sheaf reception,
note there is no se
parate lab sheet for the wind tunnel related part.

PART 1
Aerodynamics Investigative Study
Total Marks = 40.
Assignment
1
Part 1 contains
1 task
covering various aspects of aerodynamics relevant to aircraft,
choose 4
from 5 of the listed topics
. Each of those five topics should be packaged together in a formal engineering
report, written with a common theme relevant to the aerodynamics of aircraft
, offering some conclusions to
tie the report together. The work conducted should be documented as a formal report of no more than 1500
words.
Aerodynamic investigation of various considerations relevant to aircraft
Prepare a comprehensive report in MS WORD on the various considerations relevant to aircraft, discussing
in detail and some considerable depth, choosing from the following topics. This does not necessarily need
to be related to one single specific aircraft
but the topics in your report should have some kind of common
theme or relevance together as a complete set.
Base your report on 4 of the following 5 options, each of which carries 10 marks:
[1] pressure and skin friction drag changes with velocity for
commercial aircraft
[2] comparison of active and passive flow control with specific real examples
[3] multi element high lift aerofoil configurations and effect on aerodynamic efficiency L/D
[4] confidence through experimental validation of CFD modelling w
ith specific examples
[5] static (time averaged) and dynamic (time history) experimental measurements with specific real
examples
Your report should be
1500 words
, include references, images, appropriate calculations, charts, tables, and
critical
analysis
as appropriate
. All material sources utilized must be stated in the text with any images and in a separate
reference section at the end of the report. Use relevant journals e.g. AIAA Journal, RAES Aeronautical Journal,
IMECHE J. Aerospace Engineering etc.
A contents page must be included and pages numbered.
TOTAL MARKS (FOR PART 1 OF ASSIGNMENT) = 40 MARKS
