Counter Argument

Counter Argument

The Law of Attraction is usually described as a “universal law” that delivers into your life whatever you think about. You attract everything that vibrates on the same frequency of energy as your thoughts and emotions. The Law of Attraction, however, has given rise to a number of controversies and questions that seem to weaken its plausibility.
In her book “The Secret”, Rhonda Byrne stated that the Law of Attraction is the most powerful law in the universe that gives people direct control over their lives. Counter argue the main concepts underlying Byrne’s book.
Requirements
• All drafts typed

• Clearly, yet, briefly state why you object to the concepts.
• Break down the arguments into their main ideas and the support used for each. Use the counterargument PowerPoint slides to help you organize your essay.
• Make specific reference to the book/ documentary, using direct quote, paraphrase, or summary.
• Explain why the arguments are flawed, inadequate, or inappropriate.

Points to Consider:
• What specific points do you disagree on, and why?
• What types of sources and evidence does the book/documentary use for support?
• Which is Byrne most convincing argument?
• What, if any, concession does she make?
• What types of appeals are used in the arguments, to persuade the reader?
• On what ground does Byrne base her position?
• Which values does she support?

Steps in the Process

• Carefully read the text.
• Identify the main claims.
• Identify any weaknesses in the argument.
• Identify the points with which you agree (these will be your concession(s))
• Of the claims you have identified, choose the ones that you believe are most important.
• Conduct research and gather additional material from the library and Internet to support your own viewpoint and enable you to counter the author’s claims.
• Using the research you conducted and our discussion in class to make a plan of how you will argue against the claims you have identified as most important.
• Develop an outline of each claim and counter claim.
• Write your first draft, read it carefully ensuring that you have structured your arguments well.
