Contemporary World Cinema

FS111: CONTEMPORARY WORLD CINEMA

SBCC – Spring 2016

Final Essay DUE April 26 at the beginning of class

Guidelines: Please analyze two examples of contemporary world cinema and

explain how a particular theme, issue, or genre is represented stylistically in both

films. For instance, your argument may focus on a director’s signature style as it

extends across two or more films and/or a genre specific to a particular region or

national cinema. You may also examine, the representation of gender and sexuality

and/or the representation of a contemporary socio-political issue (immigration,

feminism, globalization, etc).

Format/Sources: Your essay should carefully and closely analyze specific scenes

from both films and you must contextualize your arguments and ideas using

concepts addressed in at least 2-3 essays from the course as well as at least 2-3

outside sources to explain the cinematic and cultural traditions within the

regions/countries you are examining. You must use a minimum of 5 sources and

any additional sources must be published books and/or peer-reviewed essays

cited using MLA citation.

Films to use: Strangers by the Lake and Blue is the warmest color (talks about lesbian and gay relationships/sex).
