Confucianism

Between Confucius and Mencius, we find distinct views on the relationship between human nature and benevolence. Is virtue something that we must learn? Or are we essentially benevolent? Or are both Confucius and Mencius mistaken, and we are essentially evil?

In a clear, carefully written discussion post, take a stand on this issue. Whatever shape your answer takes, it  should be informed by Joel Kuppermans chapter five and six (entitled Confucius and Mencius, respectively)  along with The Analects.

As always, you should think of your discussion post as a short (1-2 page) essay. Make sure to provide thoughtful reasons behind your response.
