not clearly defined or understood. This paper analyzes the concept of quality of life
using the framework developed by Walker and Avant [Strategies for Theory Construction
in Nursing, 3rd Edition, Appleton & Lange, Norwalk, 1995]. A literature
review examines the current usage of the concept and the concepts critical attributes.
In keeping with Walker and Avants framework, cases will be described which
further define and illustrate the concept based on the presence or absence of the
critical attributes. In closing, the concepts antecedents, consequences, and empirical
referents will be explored. The concept of QOL is particularly significant for
orthopaedic nurses. By examining QOL, nurses can become more cognizant of the
concept, patients perceptions of their own QOL, and ultimately the positive role
that nurses can play.
