Competency-Based Selection

One of the central aspects of staffing organizations is the hiring process. There are many approaches to hiring, but the basic elements are present in most organizations. Recruiting assures an adequate pool of applicants. This is an important assumption, since selection cannot be made unless there are choices. Of course, there are a lot of additional steps that must be taken before a hire can be made, but the focus of this assignment will be on the selection of the best candidate for the job. According to Phillips and Gully competency models are sometimes the basis for developing selection criteria. [1] Competencies are considered to be more relevant to job performance than qualifications. Whereas qualifications attest to a person’s credentials, competencies are measured in terms of what a person can demonstrably do at the present time. Competencies have an added value in that they can form the basis of an HR strategy that encompasses not only hiring but also training and development, performance review, and planning.

There are numerous resources online that illuminate how competencies are incorporated into management practice. For example:

After studying the textbook, the suggested references, and additional online/library resources, prepare a paper on the competency concept as it applies to staffing the organization. You may focus on a broad view of staffing, but be sure to include the hiring process. Your paper should not exceed five double-spaced pages
