comparison/contrast essay

comparison/contrast essay

A comparison/contrast essay based on two literary works. 750 words minimum with introduction, 2-4 body paragraphs, and conclusion.

You will argue for your own particular idea about the literary works, citing specifics and using quotes from the story as evidence to support your thesis. Put your thesis statement in bold.

Compare/contrast Paul in “Paul’s Case” by Willa Cather and Connie in “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates. Both are adolescents with some of the same issues. How are they alike? How are they different? Does either of the two characters reach any kind of epiphany (insight) at the end of their story? Are their two authors using them to make any of the same points, or very different points?

Comparison/Contrast essay

instructions:For the essay, you should compare and contrast ONE character/problem/situation/tension/issue from Iliad with one character/problem/situation/tension/issue from EITHER Myrrha & Cinyras, Venus & Adonis, My Thatched Roof is Ruined by the Autumn Wind, OR “Returning to the Farm to Dwell”.HOWEVER, you need a specific topic.
Suggested topics:
The relationship between parents and children
The relationship between husbands and wives
The problem of home, losing one’s home, returning home
The problems of Kingship or the relationship between the ruler and the ruled
The relationship between reason and the emotions
Nature/social strictures/
fertility/death
After you’ve selected a topic, you have to narrow your focus as much as possible. For example, you may compare Venus as a mother to Andromache as a mother.

However, you need to be even more specific:
1) what specific thing makes Venus and Andromache similar as mothers, and what makes them different, and what does that difference help you to understand differently about a specific character/problem/situation/tension/issue in one of the texts.
OR
2) what specific thing makes Venus and Andromache different as mothers, and what makes them similar, and what does that similarity help you to understand differently about a specific character/problem/situation
