comparison/contrast between Pariah and Mask

Topic: comparison/contrast between Pariah and Mask

Order Description
Reaction Paper 3 (Due Thursday, December 17; if you’d like feedback for edits, submit your first draft by Monday, December 14)

For the last Reaction Paper, you will examine the last two films of the semester. Their titles, Pariah and Mask (1985), both refer to how the main characters were struggling for social acceptance of their identities. Reaction Paper 3 involves a comparison/contrast between Pariah and Mask (1985).

In the usual format (Introduction, 3 Body paragraphs, and Conclusion), address the following prompts:
First, compare the Sexuality dynamics in each film. What kinds of identities are present in Pariah and Mask (1985), and how do they contribute to the main character being accepted or rejected by others around her/him?
Second, compare the (Dis)ability dynamics in each film. How do others frame the main character in Pariah and Mask (1985) as “deviant” and undesirable through the language of (Dis)ability, and how does that character cope with this experience?
Third, choose another identity category (Race, Gender, or Class) that you’d like to examine within these films. Compare the projections of ideology around this category through Pariah and Mask (1985).
Formatting

Each Reaction Paper should be 900-1200 words (3-4 pages double-spaced).

Citations: Be sure to cite secondary sources in-text; use MLA formatting, and include a bibliography at the end (it doesn’t have to be on a separate sheet).
In-text example (direct quote): It has been argued that “Americans have come to understand that the Constitution is a living document, one that can be and has been changed to encompass a wider meaning of equality” (Benshoff and Griffin 6).
Author name given prior to direct quote: Benshoff and Griffin have argued that “Americans have come to understand that the Constitution is a living document, one that can be and has been changed encompass a wider meaning of equality” (6).
In-text example (paraphrase) -> From an historical perspective, it’s clear that the Constitution is a “living document” whose meanings have changed over time (Benshoff and Griffin 6).
Grading

For each Paper, I will grade you on your effective, thorough answering of each paragraph prompt ([Dis]ability, Sexuality, and third identity category), plus Intro/Conclusion, in the 3-4 pages allotted. Your content (argument/evidence) is most important; grammar/style is secondary, though you must write clearly enough that I understand the argument.
