Compare Hesiod’s attitude to that of Theognis here — what sort of anxiety are these authors expressing?

The next batch of sources from the textbook (AW:R 5.2, 6.2, 6.3) will prepare you for class discussion and are relevant for the first narrative account ( instructions posted). I’m not collecting summaries for these, but I’d strongly recommend taking notes.

I would, however, like you to write a summary of the passage assigned to your group in the reading hesiod’s works and days, which you can find on the course page under ‘supplemental readings’>’archaic poetry.’ Read all the selected passages, and write a summary of the passage under your group heading. Compare Hesiod’s attitude to that of Theognis here — what sort of anxiety are these authors expressing? What troubles them about the course their respective cities are taking? In addition, write brief reactions to the ‘hoplite poetry’ of Archilochos and Tyrtaios (also in the ‘archaic poetry’ folder).

Then look ahead to the first narrative account. We’ll discuss the social background you’ll need to complete the analysis, but for now you can start on the description. Read the relevant announcement for details, but basically you’re writing a detailed description of one kouros (male sculpture) and one kore (female sculpture) from the archaic Greek sculpture collection on the flickr page.
