Essay topic: Compare and contrast the impact of social determinants of health on one vulnerable group in two different countries of the world. Discuss how society has changed in these countries since the emergence of HIV/AIDS and what the impact has been on the chosen vulnerable group.
Choose one vulnerable group:
•    Women
•    Men who have sex with men (MSM)
•    Sex workers
•    Injecting drug users
Choose two countries from within the regions of the world:( Please note that is one country from one region and one from the other region, e.g. Swaziland and New Zealand or China and Australia)
•    Sub-Saharan Africa
•    Asia
•    North Africa and the Middle East
•    Latin America and the Caribbean
•    North America, Western Europe, and Oceania (Pacific)
•    Eastern Europe and Central Asia
Choose 2 – 3 social determinants to consider (you won’t be able to cover all of these, however many of these are interrelated):
•    Discrimination and stigma
•    Social justice
•    Economics
•    Living environment
•    Health care system
The essay should build an argument that demonstrates original thinking and analysis as well as an understanding of different and diverse social and cultural perspectives. The essay MUST have an introduction, body and conclusion.
Do NOT use subheadings in the essay.

Referencing:
In text citations must be used and must conform to APA6 referencing conventions. A reference list must follow the essay. Its entries must be in alphabetical order, must use APA6 referencing style, and must be complete. Appropriate reference material must be used. Consumer sources, like the Better Health Channel, are not appropriate. School (VCE) material may not be used. Textbooks should be used as background material only. The references for the essay should consist of evidence-based, peer reviewed material similar to the sample references provided. Media and internet news/information sources may be used ONLY to document current social and cultural attitudes, if relevant.

Structure of the essay
Introduction:
•    Briefly summarise the nature of HIV in the two chosen countries with reference to the patterns of transmission (You should NOT discuss the physiological mechanism of disease).
•    Provide an overview of the impact of the social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS in relation to one vulnerable group in the two countries.
•    Indicate the changes that have occurred in these two countries in relation to the chosen vulnerable group.
•    Include definitions of key terms to be used in the body of the essay and provide an outline of the key points to be discussed, clearly setting up the structure for the body of the essay.
Body:
Impact of social determinants:
Should cover your understanding of the impact of the social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS in relation to the chosen vulnerable group in the two countries.
How society has changed:
Illustrate how society has changed and thus adapted in response to the presence of HIV/AIDS in relation to the chosen vulnerable group and the two countries you have identified.
Conclusion:
Should briefly summarise the main points in the essay and draw conclusions about the impact of social determinants of health in the context of HIV/AIDS and how society has changed in response to the presence of HIV/AIDS.  No new information should be brought up in the conclusion.

Additional Information:
It is important when evaluating the countries or regions to discuss for this essay that the data is consistent for all countries in that region, For example, “do all the countries in the UK experience the same access to health care, education, infrastructure and resources”? if so then go ahead and use the UK as one of your countries, if not then re-evaluate.   not all countries within a regions are the same and have the aforementioned resources, this could make it difficult to compare and contrast with another country.

Culture has a big impact on the countries ,but you can look at it under discrimination and stigma because the discrimination experienced in this location is largely blamed on the beliefs of the people in that country. You could equally look at it under social justice because many laws/legal systems have a foundation in religious teachings and the ideas of fairness, compassion etc. It’s important to make sure you focus on the issues relating to the countries and the determinants that are impacting on the spread of disease
